What is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic Acid, as Merriam-Webster defines it, is: a crystalline phenolic acid C7H6O3 that is used medicinally, especially as a skin exfoliant and in the form of salts and other derivatives as an analgesic and antipyretic. It is a natural compound found mainly in the bark of willow trees but is also present in other plants. Unlike alpha-hydroxy acids, which is water-soluble and only exfoliates the surface of the skin, salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, which is oil soluble, meaning it is able to penetrate deep into the pores.
What is it for?
Salicylic acid is most commonly used to treat acne-prone skin. It works by permeating deep into the pores to break down and dissolve the bonds that are keeping the dead skin cells together, purging pores of all impurities. Skin can benefit from its exfoliating properties because it loosens and removes dead surface debris that would normally clog the pores. The complexion may also appear less oily with regular use of products containing salicylic acid as a result of less sebum being secreted.
Psoriasis is another skin condition that salicylic acid is known to improve. It works as a peeling agent to lift scaly skin, helping to remove psoriasis patches. It is typically used in combination with other medicated topical treatments because the salicylic acid allows it to better absorb into the skin.
Salicylic acid is also used to remove corns, calluses, and warts from the hands or feet. It works by increasing moisture and softening the area allowing the overgrown skin to peel off slowly. Consistent treatment over a period of time will deliver effective results.
There are risks, side effects, and different levels of effectiveness associated with the use of salicylic acid varying from person to person. Depending on the percentage of salicylic acid in a product and the form it's in, it will all affect how well the product will work for an individual. A person may have to try several combinations to find a perfect fit.
